🇫🇷“ Je me sens Libanais, Beyrouthin avant tout, bien qu’habitant à l’étranger depuis bientôt 20 ans. J’ai le sentiment d’habiter cette ville à distance. Pendant longtemps quand on me demandait "où tu habites?", peu importe où je résidais, je répondais "Beyrouth". Le fait d’y avoir vécu la guerre a créé une relation intime avec cette ville et son tissu urbain. A part Beyrouth, il y a aussi la montagne. Enfants nous avons passé quelques étés à Bikfaya ; la montagne libanaise a quelque chose de mystique, elle porte en elle une grande partie de l’Histoire du Liban.
Je me sens Libanais surtout par opposition à là où je me trouve dans le monde : en France, bien que francophone, et aux Emirats, malgré mon appartenance à la culture arabe.” ----------
🇺🇸 “I am Lebanese because I’m Beiruti, even though I’ve been living abroad for the past 20 years. For a very long time when people asked me where I lived, I used to answer Beirut. I believe that living the war in Beirut created a special intimacy with the city. There is also the Lebanese mountain: we spent some summers in Bikfaya when we were kids. The mountain has a mystical, dream-like quality to it: it witnessed an important part of Lebanon’s history.
I mostly feel Lebanese by opposition of where I am in the world : in France even though I’m French-educated, and in the UAE, despite the fact that I belong to the Arab culture. “
