Is it a good idea to swim in Lebanon this summer? In Lebanon, the sea has been polluted for a long time: solid and industrial waste is often thrown in the Mediterranean, and 90 % of sewage reaches the sea without any treatment, for lack of functioning wastewater treatment plants. At the public beach of Ramlet al Baida, the levels of faecal bacteria are higher than 1,000 per 100 ml of water. For info, the maximum level considered safe for swimming is 100 . The reason behind this sad state of facts is, as very often in Lebanon, corruption. Today, the 8 month long trash crisis is worsening the situation: the leachate(the liquid that drains from landfills) that has accumulated in illegal landfills is reaching the sea. And environmental experts worry that the two new coastal sanitized landfills the government is planning on building might damage the ecosystem even more. #pollution #sea #mer #trash #poubelle #déchets#waste #garbage #Liban #Lebanon #nofilter #youstink #Lebanesedailystruggle #bacteria #swimming
