Beirut is a city of several historical layers, the first being more than 5000 years old. This shot reveals a couple. The forefront ruins are from Roman times (64BC to 640AD). To the left is St George (Greek Orthodox church). Its visible layer is from the 18th century, but there's a 4th century layer that is buried underneath (excavated and open for visits). The smaller shrine to the right is a recent renovation of Saydet El Nourieh (still researching origins). St Elias behind it is a Greek Catholic church from the 19th century (earlier 18th century layer was replaced in the 19th and the current structure was renovated in the 21st). Most of the city in the background was built in the 20th century.
