Happy New Year to you all. ❤️🌹 A staple at our Sahtein residence, rolled vine leaves are a hit with the whole family. The filling can either be vegetarian or meat. To this day, the vineyards in the village I was born in, continue to thrive, supplying the locals with all the fresh vine leaves they need during the summer and enough to preserve for the winter months that would follow. Before migrating to Australia, as a child I have vivid memories of the times my mother would send my brother and I out to the #vineyards to collect fresh vine leaves when they were at their peak during the summer season. We knew #warakenib was on the menu for dinner on those occasions. One of the first things we Arabs do, when moving houses, is to plant a grape vine. There has been rumours that some Arabs bought a certain house only because there was a great big vine, already growing in the backyard. Interesting, yes? Don't judge us. Many immigrants in the 1950s through to the 70s were known to migrate, along with themselves,a vine clipping from their homeland and the first thing they did, almost straight after their plane landed in Australia or anywhere else in the world was to dig a hole, wherever they happened to be staying and plant that golden clipping in the ground. We take pride in our backyard grape vines and will endeavour to pass on this legacy to our children and grandchildren.
