Les expats reviennent! A l’aéroport de Beyrouth, c’est la cohue. Ballons, fleurs, chocolats…Pour les Libanais aller chercher un proche à l’aéroport est un véritable événement. Mais pourquoi donc? Nabil, 67 ans un Libanais d’Afrique se souvient de son premier retour au Liban dans les années 1960. “Quand je suis arrivé à Beyrouth pour la première fois, j’ai eu l’impression d’être un ministre. J’ai été accueilli par un bus tout entier venu du Sud Liban pour m’accueillir avec des cadeaux en tous genres. A l’époque, il n’y avait pas de moyens de communication comme aujourd’hui. Et quand quelqu’un partait en Afrique, on ne savait pas quand il rentrerait au Liban alors chaque retour au pays était vécu comme une vraie cérémonie. On égorgeait même le mouton pour l’occasion, on était invité chaque jour à déjeuner. Aujourd’hui, les Libanais ont gardé la tradition de l’aéroport car nous sommes un peuple qui continue à s’expatrier. Aujourd’hui, c’est moi qui vais à l’aéroport car mes 4 enfants vivent à l’étranger." Ever wondered why so many people still bother to come and pick up their relatives at the airport? Usually with flowers, balloons and chocolate?
Nabil, 67, used to live in Africa. He still remembers his first trip back to Lebanon in the 60s: “When I came back the first time, I felt like a Minister. People from South Lebanon filled a bus and came to welcome me with numerous gifts. At that time, communication means were not as developed as today. And when someone left for Africa, they didn’t know when they would come back, so each return was duly celebrated, with the village killing a sheep in their honor, and villagers inviting them for lunch every day. Today, Lebanese keep the tradition of going to the airport alive, because we are a nation of emigrants.
Today, I’m the one who goes to the airport, because my 4 kids live abroad.”
