C’est un must have de la table libanaise. Au Liban, chaque foyer qui se respecte a forcément dans son placard du Lipton Yellow, ce thé d’un goût pourtant assez banal. Pour Nawal, 67 ans, «C’est tout simplement le meilleur thé, le seul dont je ne peux pas me passer à la maison. »
Dubitatives, nous avons posé la question à un importateur du fameux thé. Selon lui, cet amour inconditionnel pour le thé jaune est en réalité plus ou moins forcé. « Il y a cinquante ans, le thé au Liban était vendu en vrac. Khalil Fattal, un importateur Libanais a ensuite introduit le thé en sachet avec “Lipton Yellow” . Aujourd’hui, si l’on trouve quelques autres marques sur le marché, Lipton accapare encore 90% des ventes”.
When you ask for tea in Lebanon, most often than not, you’ll be served Lipton Yellow tea. For Nawal, 67, it’s the best tea, her Madeleine de Proust. Tea gourmets will most certainly beg to differ, but this strange fondness Lebanese have for Lipton Yellow has a rational explanation: “ 50 years ago, Lebanese could only buy loose tea”, explains a tea trader. “Then Fattal started importing Lipton Yellow teabags, and for a very long time, you couldn’t find anything else.
