The fertile Bekaa Valley is the country’s most important farming region and is home to many of Lebanon’s famous vineyards and wineries. It has also historically been used for the production of drugs including cannabis and opium, which created an economic boom in the region during the Lebanese Civil War in the 1980s.
The Bekaa Valley is known as the “barracks of Hezbollah”, and recruitment to the group has soared in the region in recent years due to the urgent need for fighters in Syria. 📸 @lebanesetales
