0,8 mètres, c’est la surface d’espaces verts disponible par habitant à Beyrouth, soit presque 10 fois moins que ce préconise l’Organisation mondiale de la santé. En réalité, rares sont les jardins publics dignes de ce nom qui sont gérés par la municipalité de Beyrouth. Outre Horsh Beirut (400 000 m2 environ), ouvert au public uniquement les samedis, il y a les jardins Sanayeh (22 000 m2, récemment restauré) et Sioufi (20 000 m2, en état de décrépitude). Ces parcs sont pris d’assaut le week-end par les familles en recherche d’un espace où flâner gratuitement. Les rares autres espaces verts que compte Beyrouth (24 au total) sont souvent gérés par le secteur privé, notamment les Eglises.
There are 24 gardens open to the public in Beirut, but people generally only know about the main ones: Horsh Beirut (400,000 sqm, only open on Saturdays), Sioufi (20,000 sqm), Sanayeh (20,000 sqm). If these three are managed by Beirut municipality, most of the others are owned by private organizations, mainly Churches. All in all, there are only 0.8 meters of green space per person in the Lebanese capital, way below the 9 meters per person minimum requirement of the World Health Organization. Despite their usually pretty sad state of maintenance (apart from Sanayeh which has been recently restored), these parks welcome on weekends hundreds of families looking for a free space to roam.
