Les partisans du project mettent en avant le fait que le barrage fournira de l’eau potable et non potable ainsi que de l’énergie aux habitants de Jbeil, Beyrouth et le Kesrouan. Les opposants du projet affirment que la situation géographique du barrage ne fait pas de sens: la région est traversée par une faille sismique, et son sol fond lors des pluies, ce qui ne constitue pas un support solide pour un barrage. En outre, la construction du barrage nécessite de couper un nombre inconnu d’arbres de la réserve naturelle de Janna, ce qui mettrait en danger la biodiversité de la region, considerée comme la plus riche du Moyen Orient. Le gouverneur du Mont Liban a ordonné l’arrêt des travaux la semaine dernière. Mais ceux-ci continuent, alors même que le Cabinet débat toujours de la question, et que les querelles politiques internes ont pris le dessus sur le discours scientifique. 🇬🇧 The Janna Dam project, which aim it to alleviate water shortages in the country, has been heavily debated recently. Proponents of the project argue that it will supply drinking and agricultural water as well as energy to Jbeil, Beirut, and the Kesrouan, though estimates of its total output vary. Opponents of the project argue that the location of the dam is geologically unfit: it is earthquake-prone, as there is a fault line traversing it; and the ground’s composition is not suitable for dam construction as it melts in the rain and creates caves. In addition to that, the construction of the dam requires to cut an unknown number of trees in the Jannah Natural Reserve. This would endanger the biodiversity of what is considered the richest environmental site in the Middle East. The government of Mount Lebanon issued an order of cessation last week. But works are still going on, while Cabinet is still debating the issue and political bickering took over the official discourse.
