A warmth fires inside of me on Eid Al Sha'anini عيد الشعنيني each year,... A warmth fires inside of me on Eid Al Sha'anini #عيد الشعنيني each year, as calls to prayer and the laughter of my childhood fill my heart with memories of the sugared almonds, flowers, olive branches and candlesticks my cousins and I would walk to the village Kanisa #كنيسة with. Dressed in the brand new clothes Ouma would buy for us only on those special occasions each year from the souk of Tripoli, we'd circle the Kanisa together, singing prayers of love and faith. You could hear our prayers village wide, they'd echoed through the mountains and remain as melodies dear to me to this day. We'd leave with blessed olive leaves and spend the rest of Shaa'nini visiting family and offering gifts of Ma'amoul in the spirit of love. To this day, each year, I spend late nights crafting these semolina based biscuits, filled with either dates or nuts, with my daughters and sister-in-law. We usually finish in the early hours of the morning and share them with our loved ones over Eid. With this post I wish those who read my words here, from every culture, race and creed, the gifts of love and freedom. To those who are suffering from the tragedy in Egypt over this holiday, I hold you all in my heart, my heart is heavy but my love stands strong, كل عيد وانتو بخير
