Lebanon in a Picture

Here’s a little memory I wanted to share with you all. We had only been in... Here’s a little memory I wanted to share with you all. We had only been in Australia for about 3 years when my father decided to pack up, sell the house and take us all back to Lebanon to live. I would have been about 8 years old. My grandfather meant the world to me. I couldn’t wait to see him, to sit beside him on those snowy winters nights around the fire and listen to him telling me stories of #كانيامكان “kan yama kan” (once upon a time). My grandfather owned quite a bit of land in our village. He grew olive trees, fig trees, cherry trees and most importantly he had a large vineyard. In the summertime, when the grapes and vine leaves were ready for picking, I would ride behind my grandfather on his horse and head out to the vineyard. He had a small pair of scissors, just for me, to cut the bunches of grapes and vine leaves, and to snip off any damaged grapes. He would stack them in boxes and load them onto the horses for the trip back home. As you can imagine we would have to walk back, but that didn’t deter me in the slightest. Spending time with my grandfather was a few of the best years of my life. I would come home with a large bag of vine leaves and present it proudly to my mum to either use immediately or to preserve for the upcoming winter. It’s meals like this that remind me of my childhood and the few precious moments that I spent with my grandfather. Hope your week is filled with unforgettable memories like this. ❤️
