25%, c’est le taux de décès des patients en attente d’une transplantation cardiaque à l’hôpital Beirut Cardiac Institute ces quatre dernières années. Seuls 2% des patients en attente d’une greffe ont été transplantés. 42% ont reçu un coeur artificiel car leur état ne leur permettait pas d’attendre une vraie transplantation.
L'insuffisance cardiaque est une des premières causes de mortalité au monde. Elle peut être facilement traitée notamment par la transplantation cardiaque mais au Liban, le don d’organes est toujours un sujet tabou. Beaucoup de Libanais, y compris les médecins, pensent que la religion interdit cette pratique.
Only 2 % of the patients awaiting a heart transplantation at the Beirut Cardiac Institute underwent the procedure in the past four years. 25 % of them died while waiting. 42 % - who could afford it- got an artificial heart.
Heart failure is one of the leading cause of death in the world, and can be very easily treated with heart transplants. But in Lebanon, organ donation is still not common. A lot of people, including some doctors, mistakenly believe that religion forbids it, whereas all religions agree to it, under certain conditions.
